Plot Twists & Pretzels: Easy, Literary-Themed Snacks for Your Next Book Club

Let’s be honest with ourselves for a second: we all love a good book club. We love dissecting the latest thriller, arguing over the protagonist’s terrible life choices, and pretending we didn’t just skim the last three chapters. But when your name rolls around on the hosting rota? Cue the mild panic.

Suddenly, your living room needs a deep clean, and you have to figure out how to feed a group of hungry readers without spending three days chained to the oven.

Here at The Gifted Bookworm, we firmly believe that book club should be about the books (and the gossip, obviously), not about stressing over a Michelin-star menu. So, if it’s your turn to host, put the mixing bowls down! We’ve put together a fun, quirky, and dangerously easy guide to literary-themed snacks that look like a million bucks but take mere minutes to make.

1. “Oliver Twist” Cheese Straws

“Please, sir, I want some more… cheese.” Nobody wants a heavy meal when they’re mid-debate about a cliffhanger. Enter the humble cheese straw! To make these “Oliver Twists,” simply grab a sheet of ready-rolled puff pastry from the supermarket, smother it in grated Cheddar (or Gruyère if you’re feeling fancy), fold, twist into strips, and bake until golden. They look incredibly chic in a tall glass or jar, and your guests will definitely be asking for more.

2. “Lord of the Onion Rings”

One ring to rule them all, and in the garlic mayo bind them. We promised easy, and we meant it. Buy your favourite frozen onion rings, bake them to crispy perfection, and serve them up on a nice platter with a trio of dips (sweet chilli, garlic mayo, and maybe a smoky BBQ). It’s a guaranteed crowd-pleaser. Just be prepared for at least one person to quote Gollum before the bowl is empty.

3. “The Catcher in the Rye” Dip

Nothing screams “I am an amazing host” quite like a bread bowl. Grab a round loaf of crusty rye bread, hollow out the middle, and fill it with a pre-made spinach and ricotta dip (or hummus!). Tear up the bread you removed from the centre into bite-sized chunks for dipping. It’s a very literal take on J.D. Salinger’s classic, and it involves exactly zero cooking. Holden Caulfield might think it’s phony, but your friends will think it’s delicious.

4. “Alice in Wonderland” ‘Eat Me’ Biscuits

Time for a little something sweet! You don’t need to tumble down a rabbit hole to make these. Buy a packet of nice, iced biscuits (party rings or iced jammie dodgers work wonderfully). Then, using a tube of writing icing, simply pipe the words “Eat Me” onto a few of them. Arrange them on a tiered cake stand for maximum Mad Hatter Tea Party vibes. Serve with a massive pot of tea or perhaps a sneaky glass of prosecco.

5. “Harry Potter” Pretzel Wands

Whether you’re in Gryffindor or Slytherin, everyone loves chocolate and salt. Buy a bag of large pretzel rods, melt some chocolate in the microwave, and dip the ends of the pretzels into it. Before the chocolate sets, sprinkle them with edible glitter, hundreds and thousands, or crushed nuts. They literally look like magic wands and take about five minutes to make. Hey presto snacks!
